Egyptian doctor Peter Samaan Marzouk has returned home after being held in the Maldives. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Marzouk's release was secured through consular contacts with Maldivian authorities. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, instructed the country's embassy in Sri Lanka, which also represents Cairo in the Maldives, to contact Maldivian authorities and provide Marzouk with consular assistance. The ministry's consular department was also directed to keep Marzouk's family informed of the progress in his case.
Ambassador Haddad El-Gohary, assistant foreign minister for consular affairs and Egyptians abroad, played a key role in Marzouk's release. El-Gohary held talks with the head of the Maldivian Foreign Ministry's consular department, calling for Marzouk to be treated well and for his case to be resolved promptly.
The Egyptian foreign ministry confirmed that Marzouk received proper treatment while in detention and that his case was resolved quickly. After Marzouk's return to Egypt, El-Gohary received him and his family at the ministry's headquarters. The family expressed gratitude to the ministry and other Egyptian authorities for their efforts in securing Marzouk's release.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has handled several cases involving nationals abroad this year. In August, it secured the release of an engineer held in Congo-Brazzaville and two sailors detained in Iran. The ministry has also assisted Egyptian sailors stranded abroad, arranging the return of 319 nationals from Kuwait.
The ministry has expanded its emergency consular contact channels for Egyptians overseas. It has urged Egyptians traveling abroad to follow local laws and airport security instructions and to contact the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate immediately if they face a legal problem or are detained.
The successful resolution of Marzouk's case demonstrates Egypt's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. The ministry's efforts have ensured the safe return of several Egyptians detained or stranded in foreign countries.
