The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced that 2112 precise cardiac interventions were performed free of charge at Sheikh Zayed Specialized Hospital, affiliated with the Specialized Medical Centers Authority, from January to October 2026. This move is part of the Ministry's efforts to develop cardiac catheterization services and expand the provision of cutting-edge treatment technologies for heart patients.

According to Dr. Hosam Abdel Ghaffar, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, the hospital was equipped with state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization devices this year. This enhancement enabled the hospital to handle complex and delicate cases, particularly those involving chronic total occlusion of the coronary arteries (CTO), using advanced techniques such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and rotational atherectomy (ROTA) for calcified stenosis.

Statistical data recorded 760 diagnostic catheterizations and 882 therapeutic catheterizations, in addition to 73 interventions using IVUS technology and 60 interventions for CTO cases, and 9 interventions using ROTA technology. These numbers reflect the diversity of services and the capability of medical teams to handle complex cases using the latest technologies.

In 2026, specialized services for treating heart valve diseases were introduced, including transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation in 4 cases and closure of paravalvular leaks. There was also significant expansion in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) services, with an increase in the number of cases and reception of patients from a broader geographical scope.

Dr. Maha Ibrahim, head of the Specialized Medical Centers Authority, emphasized the continued support for affiliated hospitals with the latest equipment and technologies. This support aims to widen the range of patients benefiting from services and enhance the efficiency of the treatment system.

Dr. Salah Omar Gawda, director of the hospital, stated that conducting this number of interventions over ten months reflects the efforts made to develop cardiac and catheterization services. He noted that the availability of modern devices and the introduction of advanced interventions have strengthened the ability of medical teams to handle complex cases and expanded the range of available services.

Dr. Hosam Bahi, head of the hospital's cardiology department, highlighted that the availability of state-of-the-art devices and the efficiency of the medical team have enabled safe and efficient handling of delicate cases. He emphasized the ongoing work to develop services, expand their scope, and improve the level of specialized care provided to patients.
