Egypt's GennVax and China's Minhai have signed a partnership agreement to transfer PCV-20 pneumococcal vaccine manufacturing technology to Egypt. The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) announced the deal, which aims to localize the production of priority vaccines and strengthen Egypt's manufacturing capabilities. The agreement was signed during a visit to Minhai's facilities in China by EDA Chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy.
The partnership agreement was witnessed by El-Ghamrawy, who toured Minhai's PCV-13 pneumococcal vaccine production line and reviewed manufacturing stages and technical equipment. Discussions also covered potential cooperation in manufacturing technology transfer and the exchange of technical expertise between the Egyptian and Chinese pharmaceutical sectors. El-Ghamrawy emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships with specialist vaccine manufacturers.
The deal is part of Egypt's national vaccine manufacturing strategy covering 2024-2030. The strategy aims to strengthen Egypt's vaccine industry and improve its sustainability and competitiveness. Egypt has been investing in its pharmaceutical industry, including the construction of a $220 million vaccine complex in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
The talks with Minhai addressed opportunities to develop production capacity and technical expertise, strengthen the security of pharmaceutical supplies, and expand cooperation with regional and international markets. The EDA said the visit forms part of its efforts to expand international partnerships, support technology transfer, and attract investment into Egypt's pharmaceutical industry.
Egypt's efforts to strengthen its vaccine industry have been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). In December 2024, Egypt attained WHO maturity level 3 for medicines and vaccine regulation, recognizing the stability and effectiveness of its regulatory system. The European Investment Bank also announced a €750,000 technical assistance package in June to support studies for VACSERA's planned €50 million vaccine facility.
The partnership with Minhai is expected to enhance Egypt's vaccine manufacturing capabilities and improve its pharmaceutical industry. The deal is also expected to support the development of local production capabilities and strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of Egypt's vaccine industry. Egypt's GennVax and China's Minhai will work together to transfer technology and expertise.
The agreement between Egypt's GennVax and China's Minhai is a significant step towards strengthening Egypt's vaccine industry. Key aspects of the deal include the transfer of PCV-20 pneumococcal vaccine manufacturing technology, cooperation in vaccine development and manufacturing, and the exchange of technical expertise between the Egyptian and Chinese pharmaceutical sectors.
