The Ahli Bank of Egypt and Misr Bank have collaborated with the American University in Cairo to officially launch the Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Economy. This project is part of a partnership between the three institutions to support scientific research, enrich economic knowledge, and promote development efforts in Egypt. The launch event was held at the American University in Cairo, bringing together economists, policymakers, academics, and experts.
The Ahli Bank of Egypt and Misr Bank contributed a grant of $200,000 to the School of International and Public Affairs at the American University in Cairo, divided equally between the two banks, to support the research project that began in 2022. The handbook is the result of a large-scale research project that involved around 140 researchers and reviewers, including contributions from four generations of economists and researchers.
The project evolved into a comprehensive research work that analyzes over 50 years of Egypt's economic development, allowing for an understanding of economic transformations and policies in their historical and institutional context. Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Professor of Economics at Cairo University and President of the Egyptian Economic Association, reviewed the journey of preparing the handbook, explaining that the idea came after reviewing economic handbooks issued by Oxford University Press on the economies of China, India, and Brazil.
The handbook covers various aspects of Egypt's economy, including political economy, demographics, natural resources, governance, human and social development, economic growth, macroeconomic policies, labor market, industrial and sectoral development, poverty, income distribution, and social policies. It also explores Egypt's relationship with the global economy and future challenges.
The launch event was attended by representatives from the government, the Central Bank of Egypt, banks, the financial sector, and international institutions. The handbook aims to provide a comprehensive reference for understanding Egypt's economy and inform policy decisions. The American University in Cairo hosted the event, which brought together a diverse group of stakeholders.
The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Economy is a significant contribution to the field of economics in Egypt, providing a thorough analysis of the country's economic development over the past five decades. The handbook is expected to be a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and students of economics.
The partnership between the Ahli Bank of Egypt, Misr Bank, and the American University in Cairo demonstrates the commitment of these institutions to supporting research and development in Egypt. The launch of the handbook marks an important milestone in this partnership, which aims to promote economic knowledge and understanding in Egypt.
