Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held talks in New York on Wednesday, discussing efforts to implement US President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, regional de-escalation, and bilateral ties. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The two sides welcomed the rapid development in Egyptian-Qatari relations and continued coordination on regional issues, stressing the need to further expand bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, and economic ties. They also discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including regular meetings of the Egyptian-Qatari Higher Committee and implementing agreements and projects reached through the committee.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the talks covered regional developments and efforts to contain tensions and de-escalate conflicts. Abdelatty stressed the importance of prioritizing political and diplomatic solutions and reiterated Egypt's categorical condemnation of any attacks against Gulf states or attempts to undermine their security and stability.
On Gaza, the two ministers stressed the importance of continued close coordination with the United States and regional partners to ensure implementation of Trump's peace plan, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, and begin reconstruction efforts. They also reiterated their rejection of any plans to forcibly displace Palestinians and stressed the need for the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders.
The talks also covered Sudan, with Abdelatty stressing the importance of preserving Sudan's security, stability, unity, and national institutions, and supporting a political settlement that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people. The two sides exchanged views on developments in Yemen and the Horn of Africa, stressing the importance of advancing dialogue and negotiations to reduce tensions and strengthen regional and international security and stability.
Separately, Abdelatty attended a meeting of the Peace Council, which included US President Donald Trump's adviser Jared Kushner, US special envoy for peace and the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and former British prime minister Tony Blair. The meeting discussed efforts to support the implementation of Trump's peace plan for Gaza and continued coordination among parties involved to help consolidate peace and stability in the region.
The meeting between Abdelatty and Al Thani reflects the continued efforts of Egypt and Qatar to coordinate on regional issues, including the Gaza peace plan.
