Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty participated in a high-level ministerial event on African Leadership, National Prevention, and Peacebuilding, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The event was co-organized by Egypt, Kenya, the African Union, and the UN Office for Building and Sustaining Peace. Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of national ownership and leadership in achieving sustainable peace.
The minister highlighted the 2025 review of the Peacebuilding Architecture, which reaffirmed that sustainable peace must be based on national ownership and leadership, and grounded in capable, inclusive, and resilient national institutions. He stressed the need to translate international and continental commitments into concrete national strategies and capacities, and to integrate prevention into national policies.
Minister Abdelatty also touched on the role of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, launched during Egypt's AU presidency in 2019. The forum aims to promote an African approach that shifts from crisis management to prevention, institution-building, and resilience. He showcased Egypt's efforts in this regard, particularly in leading the file of post-conflict reconstruction and development within the AU.
The minister emphasized the importance of aligning the AU's updated policy on post-conflict reconstruction and development with the 2025 review of the Peacebuilding Architecture. He also highlighted the need to enhance cooperation between the UN and AU, and to leverage the capacities of the AU's Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development in Cairo.
Minister Abdelatty concluded by stressing the need to direct international partnerships and financing towards nationally-determined priorities. He called for greater investment in prevention, citing its cost-effectiveness compared to post-conflict response. The minister also announced that the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum, scheduled for November, will continue to promote the agenda of prevention, national ownership, and institution-building.
The event was attended by various dignitaries and representatives from UN member states. Egypt's efforts to promote African leadership and national prevention were welcomed by participants. The ministerial event aimed to foster dialogue and cooperation on peacebuilding and prevention.
