Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Amalgamated Mega-City Transport Services Limited (AMTSL) and National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has emphasized the importance of efficient transportation in driving economic development. Speaking at the inauguration of 15 Ashok Leyland Falcon Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses acquired by AMTSL in Lagos, Akinsanya stated that a well-functioning transportation system is essential for the growth and productivity of any economy.
Akinsanya highlighted the impact of effective transportation on various aspects of the economy, including workers' ability to access workplaces, students' access to schools, businesses' operational efficiency, goods' reach to markets, and families' connection to economic opportunities. He noted that the inauguration marked a significant milestone in AMTSL's journey, which began with the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) bidding process and culminated in the company's incorporation through collaboration between NURTW and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
The procurement of the 15 buses involved years of planning, negotiations, and engagements with financial institutions, manufacturers, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Akinsanya revealed that these buses are the first batch of a total commitment of 50 buses, with the remaining 35 expected before the end of December 2026. He commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Lagos State government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their commitment to improving transportation.
Akinsanya also appreciated the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Keystone Bank Plc, and other partners for their roles in the project. He urged the drivers of the new buses to demonstrate discipline, courtesy, patience, and professionalism, describing them as ambassadors of AMTSL and the organized transport sector.
The NURTW president reaffirmed AMTSL's commitment to supporting efficient, reliable, and sustainable public transportation in Lagos State. He stated that the inauguration represented a new beginning for the company, its workers, and passengers. The acquisition of the CNG buses is expected to contribute to a more environmentally friendly and efficient transportation system in Lagos.
The event marks a significant step in the development of Lagos' transportation infrastructure. With the introduction of these new buses, AMTSL aims to enhance the overall passenger experience and promote a more sustainable transportation model. The company's efforts are aligned with the goals of the Lagos State government to improve public transportation and reduce the environmental impact of the transport sector.
As AMTSL continues to expand its fleet and services, the company is expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of transportation in Lagos State.
