The Edo State government has appealed to residents to be patient as it embarks on a massive repair of roads across the state. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, made the appeal during the ministry's monthly media briefing. He was joined by other commissioners and special advisers, including Hon. Chris Okaeben, Kenny Okojie, and Dr. Andrew Iyamu. Afegbua attributed the delay in road repairs to the ongoing rainy season.
According to Afegbua, no construction engineer will attempt to fix roads during the rainy season as it would amount to wastage of construction materials. He noted that the governor, Monday Okpebholo, led administration is deliberate and determined to turn the narrative around on road infrastructure in Edo State. The commissioner accused the immediate past administration of bad road construction, which has led to the collapse of road infrastructure across the state.
Afegbua further stated that the level of road decay experienced in the state is suggestive that the immediate past administration did a bad job. He cited an assessment of the GRA, Iyekogba Estate, Irihrih, and Okoroma roads, which were purportedly done by the Obaseki-led administration. The roads are now full of potholes and decayed infrastructure, raising questions about the quality of work done.
The commissioner emphasized that roads constructed with quality and durability can last for a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 30 years. He made the records of these roads to address criticisms on social media and to inform the public about the government's plans. Afegbua urged Edo people to be more patient with the governor, saying that he is determined to make Edo roads motorable for road users.
Afegbua also noted that the governor, Monday Okpebholo, led administration is very much alive to its responsibility, ensuring it contends with developmental challenges confronting the state. He mentioned that the issue of roads is of critical reference and that the government will not be lamenting or complaining about the state of roads if they had an opportunity to do credible, quality, and durable roads like the previous government.
