The Concerned Indigenes of Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to reconsider the removal of Regent Nicholas Saliu Odamah III and the reinstatement of Lukeman Momodu Odamah III as the traditional ruler of the clan. This appeal was made through the group coordinator, Ms Peggy Agbo, in a news conference held in Benin City. The indigenes expressed concerns that the state government's decision could threaten the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the community.

The crisis began when Governor Okpebholo, on November 13, 2025, removed Lukeman Momodu Odamah and appointed Nicholas Odamah as regent pending the determination of the rightful occupant of the throne. However, the state government reversed this decision on October 20, 2026, removing the regent and reinstating Lukeman Momodu Odamah. The government explained that the decision was made in the interest of peace, stability, and due process, and after reviewing appeals from Akoko-Edo indigenes.

According to Ms Peggy Agbo, the community had experienced relative peace during the 11 months of Nicholas Odamah's regency before he was removed. She warned that the decision could heighten tensions if not urgently reviewed. The group had also submitted a written objection to the governor and the State Executive Council and approached the court to maintain the status quo.

Ms Agbo appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene urgently and ensure that the dispute was resolved peacefully and in accordance with the law. She emphasized that the group wants peace, not war, and urged Governor Okpebholo, who is known for his commitment to peace, to suspend the action and reverse the decision.

In response, Lukeman Momodu Odamah III stated that the government has acted in accordance with the law and the customary tradition of the people. He noted that the case is currently before a court and advised the protesters to wait for the court's decision, rather than resorting to protests.

The indigenes' appeal to Governor Okpebholo comes as the community seeks to maintain peace and stability. The governor's decision will be crucial in determining the future of the clan and its leadership. The court's decision will also play a significant role in resolving the chieftaincy dispute.

The situation remains tense, with the community eagerly awaiting the governor's response to their appeal. The outcome will have implications for the community's peace and stability. Key stakeholders are watching closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
