Chief Emmanuel Igwe, spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, has denied rumors that he is defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Igwe stated that he would not normally respond to such speculation, but felt compelled to clarify the situation due to the political interpretations being attached to a recent encounter.
On November 1, 2026, a WhatsApp message was circulated inviting former members of the State Executive Council to a town hall meeting at the Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki. Igwe deliberately ignored the invitation to avoid any political misinterpretation, especially with the 2027 governorship election approaching. He explained that he attended the event to discuss a personal matter with Rev. Father Abraham Nwali.
At the Ecumenical Centre, Igwe exchanged pleasantries with friends, associates, and respected personalities, including former Deputy Governor Professor Chigozie Ogbu, Senator Julius Ali Ucha, and Hon. Innocent Ugo Chima. The Master of Ceremonies announced his presence, drawing attention to his arrival. Igwe left the hall before the event started, and his brief appearance was misinterpreted by some as a political statement.
Igwe emphasized that his warm reception by Ebonyians should not be misconstrued as a political declaration or an indication of changing his political allegiance. He reiterated his commitment to Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the PDP governorship candidate, and the party's vision. Igwe expressed disappointment that a simple social interaction was being sensationalized in the media.
The PDP chieftain urged those spreading defection rumors to focus on issues that genuinely matter to Ebonyians, rather than reading political meanings into ordinary social interactions. He questioned whether political relationships in Ebonyi State must be characterized by hostility, suspicion, and unnecessary conspiracy theories.
Igwe's statement was made available to newsmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and was seen as an attempt to quash speculation about his loyalty to the PDP. The 2027 governorship election is expected to be a crucial contest in the state, with various political stakeholders vying for power.
The clarification by Igwe comes at a time when political tensions are running high in Ebonyi State, with various factions jostling for position ahead of the 2027 elections. His denial of defection rumors is seen as a reaffirmation of his commitment to the PDP and its governorship candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii.
