Thabile Nyakiso, a 32-year-old Eastern Cape serial rapist, has been sentenced to eight life terms for targeting and raping eight women, including two teenage girls, in Tsolo. The Mthatha High Court also handed him 15 years for each of the three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and a further 12 months for common robbery. Nyakiso and another unidentified person committed the rapes and robberies around Tsolo, targeting women walking at New Homes and Crossbow townships.

The court heard that the first victim was a 16-year-old girl who was attacked on 19 June 2016, with a string of other attacks reported following that incident. DNA evidence linked Nyakiso to the offences committed between 2016 and 2017. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the hefty sentence, with spokesperson Luxolo Tyali saying it reflects the seriousness of the crimes.

Acting Judge Fikile Ntayiya described Nyakiso as merciless, saying his crimes had destroyed the lives of his victims. The court ruled that Nyakiso will only be eligible for parole after serving 30 years and declared him unfit to possess a firearm. This sentence brings an end to a long and painful ordeal for the victims and their families.

The rapes and robberies committed by Nyakiso and his accomplice caused widespread fear and anxiety in the Tsolo community. Residents praised the police and the NPA for their tireless efforts in bringing Nyakiso to justice. The Eastern Cape community can now feel a sense of relief knowing that a dangerous serial rapist is behind bars.

The NPA's successful prosecution of Nyakiso is a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence in South Africa. According to the NPA, this case demonstrates its commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. The sentence also sends a strong message to potential perpetrators that such crimes will not be tolerated.

Nyakiso's case highlights the importance of DNA evidence in solving crimes. The DNA evidence collected from the crime scenes was crucial in linking Nyakiso to the offences. This case demonstrates the critical role that forensic science plays in modern policing and the importance of preserving and analyzing DNA evidence.

The Eastern Cape serial rapist's sentencing brings closure to a dark chapter in the lives of his victims.
