A multi-agency police operation in South Africa's Northern Cape province has resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of drugs, illicit cigarettes, and fish. The operation, known as Operation Phakisa, took place between Tuesday and Saturday and targeted coastal areas including Kleinzee, Port Nolloth, Alexander Bay, Hondeklip Bay, and Koingnaas. The integrated operation focused on addressing criminal activities and non-compliance associated with coastal activities.
During the operation, law enforcement teams conducted searches and inspections at various premises and locations, including harbours, launching sites, mining areas, camping sites, fish shops, and restaurants. A total of 100 vehicles and 166 individuals were searched, while multiple vessels were also subjected to inspections. Vehicle checkpoints were conducted as part of the operation to improve police visibility and compliance across the targeted areas.
The police reported several significant recoveries, including a substantial amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime. Two individuals were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, and one suspect was arrested for contravening the Refugees Act. Fines amounting to R4,400 were issued for contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act, and fines totalling R4,700 were issued for contraventions of the Marine Living Resources Act.
The police also seized fish valued at approximately R1,500 in connection with contraventions of the Marine Living Resources Act. Three suspects were arrested for drug-related offences following the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of R98,500. Additionally, illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R390,000 were seized during a roadblock.
The operation involved collaboration between SAPS specialised units and partner departments, including the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, and Customs. The multi-agency approach aimed to address the various aspects of coastal crime and ensure a comprehensive response.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended all SAPS members and participating law enforcement and government departments for their commitment and collaborative efforts in ensuring the success of the operation. Otola emphasised that the SAPS Northern Cape would continue to work closely with law enforcement and government partners to address criminality and protect communities and coastal resources.
