The NGO Femme en Action pour le Développement Multisectoriel (FADEM) has initiated a training program for ex-combatants and internally displaced persons in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The program, which began on October 6, 2026, aims to equip participants with practical skills in bakery and life competencies. This project is part of a broader effort to support the return of displaced persons and stabilize conflict-affected areas in Ituri.
The training sessions are being held in the localities of Lingo and Mwito, in the territories of Djugu and Irumu. A total of 100 participants, 50 from each location, will benefit from the program. The training covers not only bakery skills but also essential life competencies, with the goal of enabling participants to develop income-generating activities. Additionally, participants receive awareness sessions on hygiene, sanitation, and nutrition.
According to Hervé Otongandi Kayumba, a technical trainer at FADEM, the program aims to promote autonomy among beneficiaries. The training is designed to provide participants with practical knowledge that will enable them to contribute to their families' needs. The project is implemented by FADEM with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funding from the MONUSCO.
One of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to FADEM, stating that the acquired knowledge will enable him to help his family. The program is part of a larger effort to support the disarmament, demobilization, and stabilization process in the region. The MONUSCO program and the P-DDRCS (Program for Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery, and Stabilization) are also involved in the initiative.
The project is expected to enhance the socio-economic autonomy of ex-combatants and displaced persons in the region. By acquiring bakery skills, participants will be able to generate income and improve their livelihoods. The program is a collaborative effort between FADEM, IOM, and MONUSCO, with the goal of promoting stability and development in the Ituri region.
The training program is a significant step towards empowering vulnerable groups in the region. By providing practical skills and life competencies, FADEM aims to promote self-reliance among ex-combatants and displaced persons. The program's impact is expected to be felt in the local communities, where beneficiaries will be able to apply their new skills to improve their socio-economic situation.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to address the challenges faced by ex-combatants and displaced persons in the Ituri region. The program's success will depend on the continued support of partners, including IOM and MONUSCO. With the right support, beneficiaries will be able to sustain themselves and contribute to the local economy.
