Harold Norman, the husband of Ghanaian fashion icon Rosemond Akua Adobea, known widely as Nana Akua, failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. His lawyer told police that he had been admitted to hospital and could not attend. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) confirmed that officers from its Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) were dispatched to the hospital to verify the lawyer's claim.
According to the Police, Nana Akua petitioned the CID on August 20, 2026, alleging that her husband had subjected her to physical, emotional and economic abuse. Preliminary investigations by the CID also turned up an earlier case involving the couple that had been handled separately by DOVVSU officers at the Lakeside and Ministries Police Stations in July 2026.
Mr Norman was arrested at his residence on August 27 to assist investigators, and a caution statement was taken from him. He was granted police enquiry bail on August 29 on the condition of providing two sureties. His scheduled court date in October was meant to be the next formal step in the case before his hospitalisation intervened.
The case drew wider public attention after videos circulated online appearing to show Nana Akua with visible injuries, alongside claims that a child in the household had also been subjected to violence. The Gender Ministry addressed the matter in a statement, also on October 7.
The Police say they are working with the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to arrange social welfare services for Nana Akua and the children involved. The saga has also resonated beyond the immediate parties, with media personality Afua Asantewaa's public message on abuse striking a chord with many Ghanaians following the allegations against Mr Norman.
No date has been given for when Mr Norman might be discharged from hospital or when a fresh court date will be set. Police have said only that he will be arraigned as soon as he leaves hospital, and that DOVVSU continues to monitor the situation.
The CID has reiterated its commitment to investigating domestic violence complaints professionally and ensuring victims are protected throughout the process. The case remains a reminder of how DOVVSU operates in such matters, from taking initial petitions and caution statements to coordinating with the Gender Ministry on welfare support for affected spouses and children.
