DPO Privacy Centre (East Africa) has posted a job advertisement for an Editorial Lead, also known as Managing Editor, to join their team on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the publications portfolio, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and credibility of published materials. The role is voluntary and remote, requiring a commitment of 8-10 hours per week for at least 12 months. The centre is based in Kampala, Uganda.

The Editorial Lead will be responsible for managing the editorial pipeline of FARAGHA Magazine, including setting themes, sourcing contributors, and overseeing publication. They will also coordinate the annual East African Data Protection Guide, working with country contributors, managing timelines, and editing contributions. Additionally, the Editorial Lead will play a key role in establishing the East African Data Protection Journal, developing its editorial policy, scope, and submission guidelines.

The ideal candidate should have a bachelor's degree in Law, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Information Technology, or a related field. They should have at least 3 years of experience in editing, legal or academic writing, research, or publishing. A solid understanding of data protection and privacy law, including frameworks in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and global standards such as GDPR, is also required.

The Editorial Lead will be responsible for quality assurance, reviewing case commentaries, research briefs, and regulatory submissions before publication. They will also develop and maintain an editorial style guide, citation standards, and a publishing calendar. Mentorship of contributors and provision of constructive editorial feedback are also key responsibilities.

In terms of qualifications, a postgraduate degree in a relevant field is an advantage, as is prior experience on the editorial team of a journal, law review, magazine, or newsletter. The candidate should have excellent written English and a sharp eye for detail, structure, and argument. Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Substack, Mailchimp, Google Workspace, or Open Journal Systems (OJS) is also desirable.

The successful candidate will gain a leadership title and recognition across the Centre's flagship publications. They will also have visibility and networking opportunities with regulators, DPOs, academics, and privacy professionals across the region. Access to the Centre's trainings, webinars, events, and capacity-building programmes is also offered.
