Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has unveiled a Sh39 billion development programme in Meru county, aiming to transform Meru town into a city by next year. The programme includes the construction of 21 kilometres of new roads in Meru town, with a budget of Sh3.9 billion. Kindiki made the announcement at Gitimene Market in Buuri Constituency, emphasizing the government's commitment to delivering projects that benefit the local community.
Kindiki took aim at critics, dismissing their attacks and focusing on delivering development projects. He stated that the government is working on 21 modern markets across the county, with the Kiirua ESP Market in Buuri nearing completion at 95 per cent. Additionally, the government is constructing 500 hostels at Kiirua Technical Training Institute to provide accommodation for students. Kindiki emphasized that his focus is on development rather than engaging with critics.
The Deputy President criticized unnamed Meru politicians who he accused of spending more time attacking him than campaigning for their own positions. Kindiki stated that these politicians are seeking various seats, including the governorship, but are instead focusing on criticizing him. He urged them to concentrate on their own campaigns rather than attacking him.
Kindiki invoked his position as an elder of the Njuri Ncheke council of elders, stating that he would not respond to insults from his critics. He emphasized that as an elder, he cannot insult his brothers or sisters. Kindiki also revealed that elders from the wider Mt Kenya region have given him a mandate to help unite communities across the region.
The elders, who met at Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu on Saturday, asked for more time to consult with elders across the country and promote a united national outlook. Kindiki stated that the elders do not want politics that divide Kenya into sections, emphasizing that Kenya is one nation and should move forward in the same direction.
Kindiki expressed his willingness to work with his critics, stating that political differences should not permanently close the door to cooperation. He emphasized that he will focus on his own politics, knowing that those who insult him will eventually come to him, and he will help them secure positions in the national government.
The development programme in Meru county also includes projects aimed at increasing productivity in farms and animals, as well as improving electricity connectivity. Kindiki stated that the government wants to transform Meru town into a city, with a focus on delivering projects that benefit the local community.
