Djibouti Télécom has completed a two-week training program in artificial intelligence (AI) for 35 of its engineers and professionals. The program, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication, aimed to enhance technical skills and support the digital transformation of the telecommunications sector. The training, which took place at the Ayla Grand Hotel, was themed "AI, Skills, and Collaboration: What Perspectives for Djibouti?" and was led by a Djiboutian expert.
The training program covered key concepts, tools, and applications of AI, enabling participants to understand its potential in the telecommunications sector. Djibouti Télécom's management views this initiative as a strategic move to stay ahead in the industry, which is undergoing profound changes driven by AI. The company's director-general emphasized that AI is not an end in itself but a tool for enhancing efficiency, innovation, and service quality.
The ceremony marking the end of the training was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication, Ahmed Youssouf Elmi, and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, Abdallah Ibrahim Omar. The event also drew experts in AI, institutional representatives, and academics. The program reflects Djibouti Télécom's commitment to developing the skills needed to harness AI and drive digital transformation.
The Ministry of Communication, in collaboration with Djibouti Télécom, is driving efforts to develop AI capabilities in the country. The minister of Communication, Mohamed Abdoulkader Moussa Helem, highlighted the growing importance of AI in transforming economies, businesses, and administrations. He emphasized the need for Djibouti to seize the opportunities presented by AI while managing associated risks.
The country's readiness for AI was evaluated using the UNESCO methodology, which identified areas of progress, including digital transformation, strategic infrastructure, and academic development. However, the evaluation also underscored the need for improvement in areas such as skills development, governance, data management, research, and innovation. The minister stressed that human capital is a vital component of Djibouti's strategy, and initiatives like the AI training program are crucial to developing the necessary skills.
The next step for Djibouti Télécom is to translate the knowledge gained from the training into practical applications. The minister encouraged the company to foster partnerships, experiment with new ideas, and innovate in the field of AI. This process must be conducted responsibly, with attention to data protection, cybersecurity, and respect for fundamental rights.
The AI training program marks a significant milestone for Djibouti Télécom as it seeks to integrate AI into its operations and services. With its existing infrastructure, connectivity, and regional hub status, the company is well-positioned to play a key role in the development of AI applications in the region. The program is part of a broader effort to drive digital transformation and improve the quality of services in Djibouti.
