Digital Virgo, a leading provider of digital payment and service solutions, recently marked 20 years of operations in Morocco. The company's co-founder, Manuel Cruz, and Mounia Terhzaz, Regional CEO for Africa, reflected on the company's growth and future prospects on the continent. Morocco was chosen as the company's first African hub due to its cultural and linguistic proximity to other African countries.

Over the past 20 years, Digital Virgo has established Morocco as a key hub for its African operations, using the country as a base to pilot, design, and deploy its activities across the continent. The company aims to develop Morocco into a center of excellence for Africa and plans to double its local workforce to approximately 140 employees by 2030. Currently, Digital Virgo employs around 70 people in Morocco and over 150 across Africa, operating in more than 20 countries.

Digital Virgo works with 30 telecom operators across Africa, reaching a potential 682 million subscribers. The company has evolved significantly since its early days, expanding from a few services in multiple markets to a comprehensive ecosystem covering payment, distribution, and monetization of digital content. Its Carrier Billing and Mobile Money services enable users to access educational, cultural, and sports content without a bank account or credit card.

The company's partnerships with local telecom operators, such as Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and inwi, demonstrate its commitment to Morocco. Digital Virgo claims to have contributed over €750 million to African digital economies over the past decade. The company supports international services like YouScribe, TOD, and Busuu in their African expansion, while also working with local producers and publishers.

Digital Virgo has launched several successful projects in Morocco, including MTTV, a streaming service offering 85 channels and 2,500 on-demand content in partnership with Maroc Telecom. In 2026, the company launched Hekaya Shorts, a Moroccan short-series service featuring 19 series and over 800 episodes, including six original productions in Darija. The company also distributes sports content, broadcasting 104 World Cup matches on mobile platforms in 2026.

Looking ahead, Digital Virgo plans to strengthen its presence in Morocco and expand into new markets, including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, and Kenya. The company's priorities include supporting Moroccan creative industries, promoting digital inclusion, and developing new data-driven solutions using artificial intelligence. The 2030 World Cup is also a key focus area for the company.

As Digital Virgo continues to grow, it aims to build on its success in Morocco and across Africa. With a focus on innovation, partnerships, and customer experience, the company is well-positioned to drive digital transformation on the continent. By doubling its workforce and expanding its services, Digital Virgo is set to play an increasingly important role in shaping Africa's digital future.
