In a workshop in Mengo, Kampala, Didas Kainamula, also known as Didas The Suit Guy, works on a half-finished jacket while a phone records the process. For the last three years, that phone has served as his storefront, marketing department, and customer service desk. His TikTok account has gained significant traction, with 900,780 followers and about 5 million likes as of October 2026. Multiple videos have surpassed two million views, showcasing his tailoring skills and business.
Didas was born on October 6, 1998, in Sembabule District. His father was a tailor, and Didas began handling fabric and observing tailoring techniques at about six or seven years of age. His training was informal and practical, learned through daily exposure to the family trade. By the time he was in Senior Six at Namugoona Parents Secondary School in 2016, he was already serving paying clients independently. He later attended Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics.
The combination of Didas's tailoring skills and economic education is unusual; he became a tailor before becoming a university graduate, rather than discovering tailoring after formal education. Between 2021 and 2022, Didas worked in a data and analytical role at the Mbuya Community Health Initiative, gaining experience in documentation, accountability, and working within an institutional environment. He subsequently refined his technical tailoring skills at C&D, a professional tailoring establishment.
Mengo is a working commercial area rather than Kampala's conventional fashion district. Bespoke tailoring there serves practical needs, including weddings, church functions, graduations, and professional clothing. Tailoring is constrained by physical labour, but digital reach works differently. A TikTok video can reach millions of people even though a tailor cannot produce millions of suits. This difference has allowed Didas to expand his market beyond Mengo.
Didas's TikTok presence has generated inquiries and potential customers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan, including people asking about prices, fabrics, remote orders, and delivery. The workshop now has a ground crew supporting production, filming, lighting, editing, and customer inquiries while tailoring continues. What began as a tailor documenting his work has therefore developed into a combined tailoring and media operation.
Didas did not begin TikTok with a sophisticated marketing plan. He started by recording the actual process of making suits—from fabric selection and measurements to pattern drafting, cutting, stitching, fitting, and final presentation. This content created two complementary forms of storytelling, demonstrating skill, consistency, and attention to detail. The growing audience has translated into business, with some customers travelling to Mengo after discovering him online while others explore remote ordering and delivery.
Among Didas's clients is Pearl Bank Uganda, a regulated financial institution that expects suppliers to demonstrate reliability, quality, professionalism, and the ability to meet deadlines. The scale of Didas's account is notable, with millions of likes and multiple videos exceeding two million views. His growth demonstrates that specialised craft can find a mass audience when the work is presented consistently and authentically.
