A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. According to reports, Uwuigbe checked into a hotel with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob, on October 5, 2026. The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The lecturer reportedly asked Jacob to leave the room to purchase something for them. However, when she returned, she found Uwuigbe lying lifeless on the bed. The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm on Sunday. The police were informed of the situation, and an investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer's death.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed that three people had been arrested in connection with the incident. The spokesperson for the command, Eno Ikoedem, said the arrested individuals included the hotel owner, the manager, and Jacob. Ikoedem stated that Uwuigbe had engaged the services of Jacob and subsequently sent her to purchase water for him.

Upon Jacob's return, she found Uwuigbe lying dead in the room. The police are currently investigating the incident. The deceased's remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary. The university has confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises.

The Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, stated that the university was not denying that Uwuigbe was its staff, but the incident was part of his private life. Aladenika also mentioned that the girl in question was not a student of the university and that everything happened outside the institution.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of individuals, especially in private settings. The police investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be revealed as the probe continues. The university has not made any further statements regarding the incident, maintaining that it occurred outside its premises.
