The sixth edition of the Derik Cultural Festival, held under the theme “Advancing Peace Through Culture,” opened on November 7 at the University of Juba. The festival, which runs until November 14, brings together senior dignitaries, cultural groups, poets, artists, and other participants to celebrate cultural diversity, promote unity, and strengthen peace through cultural expression. This year's event seeks to use culture and the arts to promote peaceful coexistence and social cohesion.

The festival pays tribute to the late Professor Derik Uya, who dedicated his life to promoting culture in Sudan and South Sudan. According to festival president Mathiang Cirilo, Uya believed culture played a crucial role in promoting national unity, reconciliation, and the development of a society that takes pride in its history and cultural heritage. The festival continues Uya's legacy by recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

Professor Peter Adwok Nyaba was named Personality of the Year, recognizing his intellectual contributions and support for dialogue on governance and reform. The organising committee also cited his role in initiating the “House of Nationalities” project, which provides a platform for dialogue and peaceful coexistence. This project aligns with the festival's goals of promoting unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Derik Cultural Festival has previously recognized South Sudanese who have made significant contributions to society. During its fifth edition in 2025, four women were honoured under the theme “Women of South Sudan: A Legacy of Struggle and Inspiration.” They included Professor Julia Aker, recognised for her contribution to education; Selwa Gabriel, for her role in diplomacy; late Viviana Nyachan, for her contribution to contemporary music; and Majori Elinana, for her work in drama and broadcasting.

The festival's theme, “Advancing Peace Through Culture,” reflects its commitment to using culture as a tool for promoting peace and unity. By bringing together people from different backgrounds, the festival aims to foster a sense of national identity and shared values. This approach is seen as essential in a country like South Sudan, where cultural diversity can be both a strength and a challenge.

The selection of Professor Nyaba as Personality of the Year highlights the importance of intellectual contributions to national development. His work on governance and reform, as well as his support for dialogue, aligns with the festival's goals of promoting peaceful coexistence and social cohesion. The festival will continue to celebrate cultural diversity and promote unity until its closure on November 14.

The Derik Cultural Festival 2026 will conclude on November 14, having provided a platform for cultural expression, dialogue, and recognition of national heroes. Key points from the festival include the recognition of Professor Peter Adwok Nyaba as Personality of the Year, the tribute to the late Professor Derik Uya, and the festival's commitment to promoting peace and unity through culture.
