The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has opened a workshop in Kinshasa on Mandatory Health Insurance (AMO), marking a significant step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage. The workshop, which runs from October 6 to 8, 2026, is attended by public officials and workers under the Labour Code. The initiative is part of the government's efforts to ensure access to healthcare for all citizens.

The Minister of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Protection, Dr. Roger Kamba, highlighted the challenges that limit access to healthcare services for many Congolese people. He emphasized that improving the health situation requires better care for the population and mechanisms to reduce the financial burden on families. The workshop brings together stakeholders to discuss the implementation, responsibilities, and protection of beneficiaries under the AMO.

The workshop is under the high patronage of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, who is committed to making healthcare accessible to all. The Director-General of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Mwamba Kazadi Dieudonné, is also participating in the discussions. The INSP is one of the public institutions involved in implementing Universal Health Coverage.

Over three days, participants will discuss concrete measures to support the deployment of Mandatory Health Insurance and strengthen social protection in healthcare. The goal is to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare on households and move closer to achieving universal health coverage.

The government aims to make healthcare accessible to the entire population through this reform. The Minister of Public Health emphasized the need for a better healthcare system, highlighting that many Congolese people struggle to access healthcare services due to financial constraints.
