Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to be prepared to make necessary sacrifices to build a country that reflects their collective aspirations. He made this statement at the 66th Independence Thanksgiving Service held at Living Faith Church, Ibusa Road, Asaba. The Governor emphasized the importance of sacrifice, courage, patriotism, and resilience in building a better future for Nigeria.
Oborevwori paid tribute to Nigeria's founding fathers for their sacrifices and contributions to the country's independence. He called on Nigerians to demonstrate their love for the country by praying for its peace and prosperity. The Governor maintained that the Church's continued intercession for Nigeria remained critical to the nation's progress. He encouraged Nigerians not to relent in prayer, citing the biblical injunction to "pray and not to faint."
The Governor emphasized the importance of wisdom in governance and leadership, urging public servants and politicians to prioritize service to the people. He reminded them that their positions were held in trust for the people, not just for themselves and their immediate families. Oborevwori added that public officials would ultimately give account of their stewardship to God, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity and commitment to the common good.
Oborevwori noted that Nigeria's 66 years of independence called for gratitude to God, particularly in the area of democratic governance. He celebrated 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, acknowledging that there had been challenges along the way. However, he expressed optimism that the country was making steady progress, and the future remained promising and exciting.
The Governor cited the biblical injunction in Jeremiah 29:7 to "seek the peace of the city" and pray for it, highlighting the Church's role in sustaining peace and stability in the country. He attributed the relative peace in Delta State to the contributions of Traditional Rulers, Presidents-General, Community Leaders, and other stakeholders, as well as divine wisdom.
Earlier, Pastor Samuel Johns of Living Faith Church urged Nigerians to remain committed to the country, stressing that nation-building required faith, patriotism, and collective responsibility. He identified civic responsibility, sacrifice, meaningful contribution, love for the nation, and positive impact on communities as key responsibilities of citizens. Johns prayed for wisdom and guidance for leaders at all levels to responsibly manage the nation's resources and serve the common good.
The thanksgiving service was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders. The Governor's wife, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, and other dignitaries were in attendance. The service was a celebration of Nigeria's independence and a call to action for Nigerians to work together to build a better future.
