The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has dismantled a suspected stupefying syndicate targeting bus passengers, arresting a Tanzanian couple in Mombasa. The DCI announced the arrests on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, naming the suspects as both Tanzanian nationals. According to the DCI, the couple is suspected of running a ruthless stupefying racket that preyed on unsuspecting bus passengers, drugging them and vanishing with their valuables.

The case that triggered the investigation unfolded on September 18, 2026, when a passenger boarded a Dreamline bus traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa. During the journey, a fellow passenger seated beside him allegedly administered a stupefying substance, rendering him unconscious. He regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital in Mombasa, where he discovered that his bag and all personal belongings had been taken.

Detectives from Makupa Police Station opened an investigation immediately, following forensic leads that ultimately pointed to the Magongo area of Mombasa. The investigation led to the arrest of the Tanzanian couple, whose identities have not been disclosed. The suspects are currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment.

Upon arresting the couple, officers conducted a search of their residence and recovered the victim's HP laptop and iPhone 17 Pro Max, providing a critical breakthrough in the case. The search also yielded a haul of items believed to be proceeds of previous crimes, including assorted mobile phones, 20 wallets, and substances suspected to be stupefying drugs.

The recovered items also included 10 wristwatches, assorted clothing, and 20 phone chargers. All recovered items have been detained as exhibits. The DCI urged members of the public to report suspicious activity by calling the toll-free line 0800 722 203 or sending a WhatsApp message to 0709 570 000.

The DCI's operation is a significant blow to the suspected stupefying syndicate, which has been targeting bus passengers along the Nairobi-Mombasa route. The arrest of the Tanzanian couple has brought relief to the public, who have been concerned about the safety of bus travel.

The suspects will face charges related to theft and administration of stupefying substances. The DCI's investigation is ongoing, with detectives working to establish the extent of the syndicate's operations and identify other potential suspects.
