CRDB Bank Foundation is seeking to connect international development finance with Tanzania's underserved rural communities and businesses. The Foundation's Managing Director, Tully Esther Mwambapa, recently attended the Blended Finance Working Group meetings at the Food and Agriculture Organisation headquarters in Rome, Italy. The meetings brought together representatives from development and financial institutions to discuss innovative financing solutions.

The discussions focused on blended finance, guarantees, and catalytic capital to attract investment to communities, farmers, and businesses with limited access to conventional financing. Participants examined ways to strengthen local financial institutions as channels for funding agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and rural enterprises. This aligns with CRDB Bank Foundation's experience in working with rural communities.

Ms Mwambapa highlighted that access to finance remains a significant barrier for rural communities and small enterprises. However, through initiatives like iMBEJU Kilimo, the Foundation has demonstrated that with the right partnerships and financing structures, it is possible to support unbankable communities. The meetings provided an opportunity for the Foundation to share its experience in Tanzania while developing partnerships.

The Foundation is preparing to roll out electricity connection subsidies for underserved rural communities under its iMBEJU Nuru programme, in partnership with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company. The programme aims to address the cost barrier preventing rural households and businesses from accessing electricity. This initiative supports the development of more resilient rural economies.

CRDB Bank Foundation's participation in the Blended Finance Working Group discussions is part of its efforts to develop financing models that combine public, private, and development capital. These partnerships could help channel funding towards businesses that create jobs, strengthen food security, and support rural development. The Foundation seeks to reduce investment risks and widen access to finance.

The Rome meeting reflects a growing trend among development finance institutions to explore blended-finance models. This approach aims to attract private investment into sectors and communities that have traditionally struggled to access capital. By leveraging partnerships and innovative financing solutions, CRDB Bank Foundation hopes to make a positive impact on Tanzania's rural development.

The Blended Finance Working Group meetings demonstrate the importance of collaboration in addressing rural development challenges. By working together, institutions can develop effective financing models that support sustainable economic growth and improve the lives of rural communities. CRDB Bank Foundation's experience and initiatives position it as a key player in Tanzania's rural development landscape.
