Kenyan authorities have uncovered a counterfeit juice manufacturing operation in Mutua Kabete, Kiambu county. The directorate of criminal investigations reported that a member of the public alerted them to suspicious activity at a homestead. Detectives from Kabete police station responded quickly, finding two men allegedly producing counterfeit juice. The suspects were arrested at the scene as officers began searching the premises.
During the search, police recovered 1,400 filled bottles of suspected counterfeit juice in 200ml and 300ml sizes, alongside 56 cartons of empty bottles and five packets of bottle tops. Other items seized include two blue drums, three sorted color basins, office rubber, glue, rubber stamps, ink, and assorted stickers. The crime scene investigation team processed the recovered items, securing them as exhibits to support investigations.
Police also found an expired certificate authorizing the use of the standardization mark for a well-known juice brand, as well as assorted powdery and colorless substances packed in polythene bags in 50-gramme portions and 200ml and 300ml bottles. The two suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. The police warned that counterfeit beverages produced in unregulated and unhygienic environments could pose serious health risks to consumers.
The directorate of criminal investigations reiterated its commitment to combating counterfeit products and dismantling networks involved in their manufacture and distribution. The agency urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities anonymously through a toll-free number or WhatsApp. This operation aims to reduce the rate of crime in the country, particularly in the production and distribution of counterfeit goods.
The seized items were processed by the crime scene investigation team and are being held as exhibits to support further investigations. The police are working to fight crime in the country, and this operation is seen as a significant step in that direction. The suspects' arrest and the seizure of counterfeit goods are expected to help reduce the circulation of fake products in the market.
Counterfeit products not only pose health risks but also undermine legitimate manufacturers and may deprive the government of revenue through unpaid taxes. The police are urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat counterfeit products. The investigation is ongoing, with the police working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the counterfeiting operation.
The Kenyan police have been working to enhance their crime-fighting efforts, and this operation is part of a broader strategy to tackle counterfeiting and other forms of organized crime.
