The "Africa Art" project, initiated by Africa Centrum, has brought contemporary African art to 11 cities in Russia, featuring works from nearly 30 artists across 18 countries. This initiative coincides with the third Russia-Africa Summit and the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum. The project aims to increase the visibility of African contemporary art in Russia and foster exchanges between African artists and Russian cultural professionals.
The showcased artworks, displayed on digital screens and facades, explore themes such as cultural memory, urban life, and identity. A selection committee, comprising Igo Diarra, director of the Medina Gallery in Mali, and Daria Vanyukova, deputy head of the Department of African Cultures at the Russian National Museum of Oriental Art, carefully chose the artists and their works. This curation ensures a diverse representation of African artistic talent.
In Moscow, meetings organized on October 28 and 29 at the National Museum of Oriental Art and the ZILART museum provided a platform for several African artists to engage with Russian art professionals. Notable attendees included Congolese artist Baudouin Mouanda and Malian artist Daou Bakary Emmanuel. These interactions facilitated discussions on potential artistic and cultural collaborations between Africa and Russia.
During the meetings, artists shared their interests in exploring collaborative opportunities. Baudouin Mouanda mentioned potential partnerships centered around his ClassPoCulture center in Brazzaville, while Daou Bakary Emmanuel expressed enthusiasm for developing relationships with Russian artists. These exchanges highlight the mutual interest in fostering creative ties between African and Russian art communities.
Jocelin-Patrick Mandzela, president of Africa Centrum, emphasized that the initiative seeks to establish lasting relationships between African and Russian cultural actors, paving the way for joint projects in Africa. Africa Centrum plans to continue the project with Russian photographers, videographers, and visual artists, with upcoming exhibitions scheduled in Brazzaville and St. Petersburg.
This project is part of a broader cooperation between Africa Centrum and the Roscongress Foundation, which began in 2023 with the "Stars of Africa" festival. The partnership has since been sustained through various economic and cultural events in Russia. By promoting African art in Russia, the project contributes to a deeper cultural understanding between the two regions.
The "Africa Art" project not only showcases African creativity but also underscores the growing cultural exchange between Africa and Russia. With its focus on collaboration and mutual visibility, the initiative is poised to yield long-term benefits for artists and cultural institutions on both continents.
