The construction of the new Medical Stores Department (MSD) warehouse in Chato, Geita region, Tanzania, has reached 97% completion. The warehouse, covering 4,800 square meters and costing TSH 19 billion, is expected to significantly improve the storage and distribution of health products in the Kagera, Geita, and neighboring regions. Once operational, it will serve 17 local government areas, up from the current 11.
The new warehouse is anticipated to be a critical hub for storing and distributing health products, allowing MSD to increase its storage capacity and improve service delivery. Currently, MSD's Kagera region office, located in Muleba district, faces challenges due to limited storage space and adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall. The new facility will enable MSD to store more products in the required conditions and expand its services.
According to Kalendero Masatu, MSD Kagera region manager, the completion of the warehouse will enable the department to increase its storage capacity and expand services to clients. The new warehouse will also allow MSD to take on a larger workload, facilitating the distribution of products to areas that were previously served by the Mwanza region, as well as two additional local government areas from Kigoma region.
The construction of the warehouse began on August 20, 2025, and was planned to be completed within 14 months. Patrick Laibo, an engineer with HAINAN International Ltd, the company implementing the project, reported that the office building is 99% complete, while the main warehouse is 96% complete, pending the installation of air conditioning systems and final touches.
The project has not only improved infrastructure but also created employment opportunities for local residents. Over 100 young people have gained jobs through the project's implementation, and the initiative has helped build their skills and expertise in various construction activities.
Julieth Msele, MSD Kagera's customer service officer, noted that the new warehouse has ample space and a conducive working environment, which will facilitate service delivery and product storage. The completion of the project is expected to enhance MSD's overall operations and service delivery in the region.
The MSD Chato warehouse project is nearing completion, with the final touches being put in place. Once operational, the warehouse will significantly improve the storage and distribution of health products in the region, ultimately benefiting the local population.
