The Comoros will host the 12th Indian Ocean Island Games from August 10 to 19, 2027, marking the first time the country has organized the event in its nearly 50-year history. The Organizing Committee, led by its president, met with Valérie Filain, president of the Association of Radios and Televisions of the Indian Ocean (Artoi), to discuss media coverage and logistical challenges. Filain, also the regional director of Réunion La 1ère, expressed her support for the event, ensuring that her organization will contribute to its success.

The meeting focused on the 18 disciplines selected for the 12th edition of the games, as well as the media coverage and infrastructure required to host the event. Filain emphasized that her organization is preparing to broadcast the games, but the schedule and competition venues will determine the specifics. The president of the Organizing Committee assured that the schedule will be available by Thursday and that the venues have already been selected.

The president of the Organizing Committee, Mohamed Issimaila, discussed the challenges of hosting the games, including the need for significant financial resources. He mentioned that a "plan A" is in place, but it requires substantial funding. The committee is currently seeking partners and funding to support the event. Issimaila also highlighted the importance of leaving a legacy for the country's athletes and sports infrastructure.

The games will feature 3,000 participants, including athletes and officials, who will be accommodated in the village at Mwandzaza Djumbe. The village is expected to provide adequate housing and facilities for the duration of the event. The president of the Organizing Committee also mentioned that the islands of Ndzuani and Mwali may host certain disciplines, pending satisfactory conditions for athlete accommodation and security.

The quality of internet connectivity and network coverage was also discussed, with concerns raised about the reliability of 5G connectivity. Guilhem Fraissinet, director of information content, suggested exploring alternative solutions, such as Starlink, a network developed by SpaceX. However, the use of Starlink has been restricted in Comoros due to licensing issues.

Philippe Hao Thyn Voon, president of the International Committee of the Indian Ocean Island Games (CIJ), is expected to visit Comoros on October 10, accompanied by other committee members. During his previous visit in April, he inspected the country's sports infrastructure and noted significant progress, but also identified important challenges to be addressed.

The Indian Ocean Island Games will provide an opportunity for Comoros to showcase its capabilities as a host country and to develop its sports infrastructure. With the support of Artoi and other partners, the Organizing Committee aims to deliver a successful event that will leave a lasting legacy for the country's athletes and sports community.
