The Indian Ocean Commission (COI) recently launched an online course, titled "Introduction to ICZM for decision-making," in Port-Louis, Mauritius. This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is designed for decision-makers in both the public and private sectors. The course focuses on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), covering topics such as the dynamics of the Mauritian coastline, the value of coastal and marine ecosystems, and the social and economic challenges associated with coastal management.
The course consists of five modules and will be hosted on the online platform of the Mauritius Institute of Education. It was developed by the Indian Ocean Islands Foundation as part of the Resilience of Coastal Zones in the Indian Ocean (RECOS) project. This project is funded by the French Development Agency and the French Global Environment Fund. The launch event was attended by Mauritian Environment Minister Rajesh Bhagwan.
The COI's Secretary General, Dr. Ibrahim Norbert Richard, emphasized the importance of understanding the complexities of coastal management before taking action. He stated, "Pour agir, il faut d'abord comprendre," which translates to "To act, one must first understand." This course aims to equip decision-makers with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about coastal zone management.
The course will cover various aspects of ICZM, including the dynamics of the Mauritian coastline, the value of coastal and marine ecosystems, and the social and economic challenges associated with coastal management. By providing this training, the COI hopes to enhance the capacity of decision-makers to manage coastal zones effectively and sustainably.
The launch of this online course is a significant step towards promoting sustainable coastal management practices in Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region. The COI is committed to supporting its member states in addressing the challenges associated with coastal management, including climate change, pollution, and overfishing.
The Resilience of Coastal Zones in the Indian Ocean (RECOS) project aims to enhance the resilience of coastal communities to the impacts of climate change and other environmental stressors. The project includes several components, including capacity building, research, and policy support. The online course is a key component of this project, as it will help to build the capacity of decision-makers to manage coastal zones effectively.
The COI's efforts to promote sustainable coastal management practices are crucial for the long-term sustainability of the Indian Ocean region. The region's coastal ecosystems provide a range of ecosystem services, including fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. Effective management of these ecosystems is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of coastal communities.
