Nigeria's Super Eagles will face Russia in Tuesday's international friendly with a significantly depleted squad after injuries and club restrictions ruled several invited players out of the encounter. The absences have reduced Head Coach Éric Chelle's options and placed greater emphasis on squad depth as Nigeria prepares for a demanding international assignment.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi is among the notable absentees after sustaining a minor knock during Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau last week. His absence removes one of the team's most experienced midfield options and leaves Chelle with fewer established players to rely on in the centre of the pitch.

The situation was compounded by the decision of Eintracht Frankfurt not to release midfielder Raphael Onyedika for the friendly. Defender Bright Osayi-Samuel and UAE-based midfielder Ridwan Abdulrasaq Popoola were also prevented by their clubs from joining the national team. Switzerland-based defender Victory Akpe will miss the trip because of an injury.

Austria-based Moses Usor, who scored on his Nigeria debut against Madagascar in Uyo on Sept. 25, was another expected addition to the squad. However, despite Chelle's request for his release, LASK FC instructed the player not to travel to Russia. The absence of several players highlights one of the recurring challenges facing international teams.

National coaches can therefore find themselves preparing for important friendlies without some of their preferred selections. For Nigeria, the situation also provides an opportunity to assess the strength of its wider player pool. With several established names unavailable, the Russia fixture could give fringe players valuable exposure at senior international level.

Suleiman Mubarak, invited from Slavia Prague in Czechia, was also unable to make the trip because his residence permit had not been secured. His absence adds another logistical setback to a squad already affected by injuries and club decisions. Nigeria's reduced numbers will be tested against a Russian side that previously held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in Moscow 16 months ago.

Despite the disruptions, 18 Super Eagles players are in Russia for the friendly, including goalkeepers Michael Atata, Samuel James, and Stanley Nwabali. The available players will provide Chelle with an opportunity to assess how his available players respond against a team with which Nigeria has already had a competitive encounter, and evaluate alternatives ahead of future competitive matches.
