Madonna University in Rivers State, Nigeria, has faced criticism after expelling a final-year nursing student, identified as Mercy, and suspending 14 others for appearing in a viral TikTok video. The video, part of the "Gen Z nurses" challenge, showed the students dancing in a hospital environment, sparking widespread attention and debate. The university's disciplinary action has triggered calls for reconsideration, particularly given that the expelled student was in her final year.
The viral TikTok video, uploaded in August 2026, featured the students dancing in various locations, including a hospital waiting area, staircase, corridor, and inside a bus on the university premises. The clip, which carried a Pidgin caption, was shared by social-media blogs and garnered over 1.7 million views on X. The university's Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chima Achu, confirmed that the video was recorded inside the institution's teaching hospital and that an official response was being prepared.
Medical influencer and TikTok creator Nurse Girma has appealed to the university to show the students clemency, citing the severity of the punishment. He initially thought the people in the video were practising nurses but reconsidered his position after learning they were nursing students. Girma expressed concern, especially given that the expelled student was a 500-level student, nearing the end of her training.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also called for the university to reconsider the punishment, acknowledging that the students' conduct was inappropriate but arguing that expulsion was too severe. NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez stated that the punishment could fundamentally alter the course of a young person's life and urged the university to replace the expulsion with a stern warning.
The Nigerian Universities Nursing Students' Association (NUNSA) has joined calls for the sanctions to be reviewed, beginning discussions with relevant stakeholders and the university management to secure a fair resolution for the affected students. The association aims to represent the interests and welfare of the students involved.
The reaction to the sanctions has been mixed, with some defending the university's decision and others questioning whether expulsion was proportionate to the offence. Some critics have suggested alternative punishments, such as suspension, withholding results, or community service.
The incident has sparked a wider debate about professionalism and discipline in nursing education, with various stakeholders weighing in on the matter. As the situation unfolds, the university's response and the fate of the affected students remain to be seen.
