In Bunia, Ituri province, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the first responders have been vaccinated with Ervebo as part of a clinical trial. The vaccine has proven effective against the Zaïre strain of the Ebola virus, which has been the most common strain in the past. The trial aims to determine if Ervebo can also protect against the Bundibugyo strain, which is causing the current outbreak.

The DRC is experiencing its 17th Ebola outbreak, which has become the deadliest in the country's history. The outbreak, declared in mid-May, has caused 3,639 deaths and infected 7,541 people, with a fatality rate of 48.3%, according to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). The virus has spread to seven provinces, and the response efforts have been hampered by lack of resources, insecurity, and mistrust from local communities.

The clinical trial, which targets 20,000 people and will run for nine to 12 months, aims to assess the effectiveness of Ervebo against the Bundibugyo strain. The vaccine has been allocated to the DRC, with 70,000 doses available from the global stockpile. So far, over 3,000 people have been vaccinated in the Tshopo province and over 700 in the Bas-Uélé province.

Healthcare workers, who are at high risk of infection, have welcomed the vaccination. Annie Banage, a nurse at an Ebola treatment center, said, "We are in contact with patients every day, and it's essential that we are protected so that we can protect our patients." The vaccination is taking place in tents set up in front of the provincial laboratory in Bunia.

The response to the outbreak has been challenging due to insecurity and mistrust from local communities. There have been instances of violence against healthcare workers and facilities, which has hindered the response efforts. Despite the challenges, the Africa CDC has reported that the number of cases has plateaued, but the situation remains critical.

Dr. Steve Ahuka, the head of the response efforts in the DRC, acknowledged that while Ervebo is effective against the Zaïre strain, its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain is unknown. The clinical trial aims to provide this information and help control the outbreak.

The situation in the DRC remains dire, with 1,823 people reported to have recovered and the virus present in seven provinces. The government and international organizations are working together to respond to the outbreak, but the challenges are significant.
