Civil society organisations (CSOs) from Chitipa, Karonga, and Rumphi districts in Malawi have launched an awareness campaign to encourage communities near the Chiweta-Karonga Road to protect construction materials for the road's rehabilitation. The campaign follows an announcement by Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango that contractors will begin rehabilitation works in November. Rumphi District Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Network chairperson Jaih Kanyondo emphasized the role of CSOs in supporting government development initiatives and advocating for community involvement.
According to Kanyondo, the CSOs' role is to support government on development, raise awareness on critical issues, advocate for development, and provide checks and balances to government. The CSOs are urging communities to desist from stealing construction materials to ensure the successful completion of the project. This appeal comes as the communities near the Chiweta-Karonga Road face significant challenges due to the road's poor condition.
Local residents and stakeholders have expressed concerns about the road's condition, describing it as a "death trap." Taxi operator Medical Msiska, who operates on the Chiweta-Uliwa-Karonga Boma Road, highlighted the frequent vehicle maintenance required due to the road's poor state. Msiska's sentiments reflect the broader concerns about the road's impact on the local economy and community safety.
Chitimba resident Mercy Nyirenda welcomed the CSOs' message and pledged to encourage others to protect the construction materials. Nyirenda emphasized the road's importance as a link between Malawi and Tanzania, stressing the need for communities to guard the materials to ensure the project's smooth implementation.
