The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched a significant development project at Oke Owa United Anglican Primary School in Ikoto, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State. The initiative, carried out through the Church's Humanitarian Services, aims to improve the school's infrastructure and provide essential facilities for students and teachers. This project was commissioned on September 21 by Elder Christian Chibundu, a member of the Africa West Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The project includes the renovation of classroom blocks, construction of 10 modern toilet units, installation of a solar-powered borehole, and provision of classroom furniture. These upgrades are designed to enhance the learning environment, promote hygiene, and improve access to clean water within the school. According to Elder Chibundu, the project was made possible through contributions from individual members of the Church worldwide, highlighting the organization's commitment to serving humanity.
Elder Chibundu emphasized that the project is part of the Church's efforts to give back to society and put into practice the teachings of Jesus Christ on love, service, and helping those in need. He stressed that service to humanity should be driven by love rather than the pursuit of recognition. The Church's intervention in the school's development underscores its recognition of education's importance to the future of children.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including the Baale of Ikoto, High Chief Abiodun Adekunle Odunsi, and the Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Agatha Chibuzor Nwankwo. In her welcome address, Mrs Nwankwo described the commissioning as a significant milestone in the school's history, expressing gratitude to the Church for its generosity and humanitarian intervention.
The project is expected to improve the learning environment and welfare of pupils and teachers at Oke Owa United Anglican Primary School. The facilities are also anticipated to promote hygiene and provide access to clean water, contributing to a healthier environment for the school community. The Baale of Ikoto, High Chief Abiodun Adekunle Odunsi, commended the Church for funding the project and acknowledged the efforts of Mrs Nwankwo in facilitating the intervention. He announced that the Ikoto Community Executive had approved a chieftaincy title, Yeye Gbeko-Niyi, for the head teacher in recognition of her efforts towards the community.
Other stakeholders, including the Education Secretary, Odogbolu Local Government, Alhaji Saka Giwa, and Vice President, Nigerian Union of Teachers, Abuja, Comrade Titilope Adenanjo, expressed appreciation to the Church for its humanitarian intervention. The project has been well-received by the school community, with stakeholders looking forward to maintaining the facilities and ensuring their longevity.
