The Chunya District Council in Tanzania has initiated measures against groups that have failed to repay loans provided at a 10% interest-free rate. According to the council's Executive Director, Tamim Kambona, the decision to take action was made to ensure that the groups fulfill their obligations to repay the loans. The council has imposed restrictions on providing loans to certain wards where these groups are based.

The move is part of the council's efforts to recover over 600 million Tanzanian shillings owed by 87 groups out of 216 that received the loans. The groups that fail to repay their loans will face legal action, with some already being taken to court for allegedly obtaining the funds through fraudulent means. The council aims to ensure that citizens benefit from these funds.

The restrictions imposed by the council affect several wards, including Makongorosi, Chokaa, and Mamba. According to Ester Kondobole, the Acting Social Development Officer for the Chunya District, some groups, such as those comprised of people with disabilities, have faced challenges in repaying their loans on time.

Kondobole also cited groups consisting of young people as facing difficulties in repaying their loans, with some taking the loans and failing to repay them before moving to other areas. The officer attributed this challenge to the fact that many young people in the district are engaged in mining activities, which often require them to move from one location to another.

The council's efforts to recover the loans are ongoing, with the aim of ensuring that the funds are repaid and that citizens can continue to benefit from such initiatives. The district has a total of 216 groups that received loans, with 87 of them failing to repay their loans.

In addition to taking groups to court, the council has also imposed economic restrictions on the wards where these groups are based, as a form of penalty for not repaying their loans. This approach is intended to encourage the groups to fulfill their obligations and repay the loans.

The Chunya District Council's initiative to provide interest-free loans aims to support local development and empower citizens. However, the challenge of loan repayment has become a significant issue, prompting the council to take action to recover the funds and ensure that the program's objectives are met.
