The Chipande Milk Bulking Centre, nearing completion, is set to transform dairy farming in Malawi's Machinjiri area. Funded by the Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme, the centre will serve 7,352 dairy farmers under the Chipande Extension Planning Area (EPA). The programme is an initiative by the Government of Malawi, supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).

For years, dairy farmers in the EPA have faced challenges due to long distances to deliver and process their milk at a proper bulking facility in Blantyre city. Misfortunes Mtuwe, a farmer from Likomba Village, said the construction of the facility is a relief to the farmers. He added that dairy farming has changed his life, earning him close to K1 million a month. Mtuwe urged people in the EPA to join dairy farming, citing its profitability and reliability throughout the year.

The Trade Project aims to enhance value chain commercialisation and build the resilience of rural people, with a focus on strengthening the dairy value chain. National Coordinator Babra Ntapala said the facility will improve milk handling, enhance product quality, and increase farmers' access to competitive markets and processors. She added that the introduction of milk bulking groups has encouraged more farmers to venture into dairy production, creating opportunities for increased household income and improved livelihoods.

The Trade Program Project is providing infrastructure development, including road rehabilitation and bridge construction, to improve connectivity and transportation. The facility has received full government support, recognising that dairy farming is at the heart of the government's development agenda. Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, toured the construction site, appreciating progress and getting first-hand information on how the facility will assist dairy farmers.

Once fully operational, the Chipande Milk Bulking Centre is expected to be a catalyst for economic transformation in Machinjiri. The centre will provide a reliable collection point, reducing losses due to spoiled milk and long distances to sell milk. Farmers like Mtuwe have already started reaping benefits from dairy farming, and the centre is expected to lift communities out of poverty and drive sustainable rural development.

The Trade Project has made significant progress, with over 1,500 farmers registered in the bulking group, and a population of 927 cattle. Ntapala said without the intervention, these farmers may not have been registered due to the lack of value in dairy farming. The project aims to enhance the livelihoods, incomes, and resilience of rural farmers and smallholders by promoting agricultural value chain commercialization.

The Chipande Milk Bulking Centre is a significant step towards achieving the government's development agenda, which prioritizes dairy farming. With the right infrastructure, support, and markets, dairy farmers can drive sustainable rural development and improve their livelihoods. The centre's impact is expected to be felt beyond the Machinjiri area, serving as a model for other rural communities in Malawi.
