China has reaffirmed its commitment to good governance, national development, and global cooperation through sustained reforms within the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). The Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC in Beijing reviewed and adopted a resolution on major issues concerning the continued pursuit of full and rigorous Party self-governance. This session outlined strategies to strengthen internal discipline and provide political direction for China’s modernisation and national rejuvenation.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, China’s development achievements were largely driven by the Party’s commitment to self-reform, accountability, and the fight against corruption. These efforts have strengthened the Party’s capacity for self-correction, improved governance, and reinforced its role in advancing national development. China has made significant economic and social progress, including the development of the world’s largest industrial system and the growth of its manufacturing sector.

China has also seen the expansion of its middle-income population to more than 400 million people and the eradication of absolute poverty. The country’s continued development and expanded economic openness are expected to create opportunities for international trade, investment, and global economic stability. China’s contribution to global economic growth has been estimated at about 30 per cent for several consecutive years.

On international relations, Ambassador Dunhai stated that China remained committed to respecting the sovereignty of other countries and their right to determine their own development paths. Beijing neither exports its governance model nor attaches political conditions to its cooperation with other nations. China is advancing the Global Development, Global Security, Global Civilization, and Global Governance Initiatives to strengthen international cooperation and address common challenges.

China-Africa relations were also highlighted, with Ambassador Dunhai reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to strengthening cooperation through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The 2024 FOCAC Beijing Summit saw President Xi Jinping announce ten partnership actions to support Africa’s modernisation. China has also implemented zero-tariff treatment for African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, effective from May 1, 2026.

This policy is seen as an opportunity to expand African exports and promote industrial development. Nigeria, a strategic partner and major driver of Africa’s development, is pursuing economic reforms, attracting foreign investment, expanding international trade, and promoting technological innovation. The comprehensive strategic partnership between Nigeria and China has entered a new phase, with both countries deepening exchanges on governance and aligning development priorities.

The Chinese Ambassador reaffirmed his country’s determination to sustain internal reforms, pursue high-quality development, and expand international engagement. China is ready to work with Nigeria and other Global South countries to promote mutual benefit, solidarity, peace, and shared prosperity.
