The global large language model (LLM) market is rapidly expanding, with ChatGPT maintaining a significant lead among AI chatbot platforms. According to StatCounter data, ChatGPT accounted for 79.4% of the global AI chatbot market share in August 2026. This is far ahead of Google Gemini, which had a 10.9% share. Other notable players in the market include Perplexity with 4.31%, Microsoft Copilot with 2.79%, and Claude with 2.57%.
ChatGPT also dominates the Nigerian market, accounting for 75.72% of AI chatbot market share in August 2026, according to StatCounter. Google Gemini had a 13.35% share, followed by Microsoft Copilot with 4.48%, Claude with 3.73%, and Perplexity with 2.73%. While ChatGPT remains the most-used identifiable chatbot in Nigeria, competing platforms have established a measurable presence in the country. This indicates a growing interest in AI chatbots among Nigerian users.
The competitive landscape of the AI chatbot market in Africa is similarly concentrated around a few platforms. ChatGPT held 72.75% of AI chatbot market share in August 2026, while Google Gemini accounted for 16.14%. Microsoft Copilot had a 4.9% share, Perplexity had 3.24%, and Claude had 2.94%. ChatGPT's dominance is evident across the continent, but other platforms are gaining traction.
An analysis of StatCounter data found that ChatGPT remained the leading chatbot in 192 of 198 countries. However, its share declined in 172 countries over the preceding year, while Google Gemini recorded the largest increase in market share in 143 countries. This indicates a shifting competitive landscape in the AI chatbot market.
When examining user engagement, rather than web traffic alone, the competition becomes more pronounced. Sensor Tower reported that global time spent on generative-AI applications was projected to rise from 17.2 billion hours in the first half of 2025 to 36 billion hours in the first half of 2026. This represents a significant increase in user engagement with AI chatbots.
ChatGPT's growth is also reflected in its user base. It became the fastest mobile application to reach one billion monthly active users, achieving this milestone in May 2026. Additionally, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini together accounted for nearly 90% of total time spent across AI-assistant applications in the first quarter of 2026.
The expansion of AI is not limited to consumer chatbots. According to Stanford University's 2026 AI Index, generative AI reached 53% adoption within three years, faster than the personal computer or the internet reached comparable levels of adoption. The report also found that 88% of surveyed organisations had adopted AI, while generative AI was being used in at least one business function by 70% of organisations.
