The Chadian cotton company, Cotontchad SN, recently concluded a two-day workshop aimed at revitalizing the country's cotton sector through partnerships. The event, which took place on September 16-17, 2026, brought together producers, public institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, private sector representatives, and international agencies. Discussions focused on the economic, social, and environmental challenges facing the cotton industry. Participants gained insight into Cotontchad's activities across three key areas.
The workshop led to several recommendations, including the need to enhance producers' capacities in good agricultural practices, support the establishment and functioning of cooperatives, and foster new collaborations among stakeholders. Representatives from the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, and Commerce proposed setting up dialogue and exchange platforms to monitor the implementation of these recommendations. The Ministry of Agriculture suggested creating a platform for monitoring and evaluating initiatives.
Participants emphasized the importance of community development, particularly through support for Village Savings and Credit Associations (AVEC) and improvement of infrastructure, especially sanitation facilities. In his closing remarks, Cotontchad SN's President of the Board of Directors, Saad Cherif Ahmed, called on the state and Olam Agri to strengthen their support for the sector's revival. He highlighted the need for access to quality agricultural inputs at reasonable prices and a policy promoting cotton production competitiveness.
Saad Cherif Ahmed also stressed the importance of maintaining and rehabilitating rural roads to reduce logistical costs and facilitate rural communities' access to markets. He expressed optimism about the workshop's outcomes, stating that participants left with a clearer vision and a common desire to translate discussions into concrete actions.
Victoire De Wever, Director of Partnerships at Olam Agri, shared her impressions of the workshop, noting that it successfully brought together over 25 organizations and sparked meaningful conversations. She emphasized the willingness of stakeholders to continue discussions and collaborations beyond the workshop.
