Capital Sportiff Sports Club recently commemorated its 22nd anniversary with a Founders' Day celebration at New Capital School, Asokoro, Abuja. The event featured a football tournament and recognition of members who contributed to the club's development since its founding in 2004. The club's home ground hosted the anniversary event, bringing members together to reflect on its journey over the past two decades.
The football tournament was a highlight of the celebration, with Team PU, Team AVM, and Team Vitus competing in a round-robin format. Team PU began the competition with a 2-1 victory over Team AVM. In a closely contested match, Team Vitus edged AVM by a goal in a disputed penalty decision. The final match between Team AVM and Team Vitus ended in a draw, showcasing the competitive spirit of the members.
Dr. Victor Udeh, a founding member known as "Machine," recalled the club's humble beginnings in 2004 and expressed satisfaction with its growth over the years. He urged members to preserve the relationships and sense of community that had sustained Capital Sportiff. Udeh's sentiments resonated with the members, who have maintained strong bonds despite the club's evolution.
Nwosu Christian Okechukwu, a member known as "Get Some" or "DJ Khaled," reflected on the club's journey, highlighting its transformation from a fitness-oriented group to a network of friends supporting one another through life's stages. Okechukwu noted that the club had endured challenges, including breakups and reunions, but had emerged stronger. He wished the club continued glory and hoped for the inclusion of younger members.
Oladimeji Fabiyi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, identified friendship, comradeship, and family values as key features that have kept the club together. He noted that members from diverse ethnic backgrounds had maintained strong bonds and supported one another during difficult periods. Fabiyi also mentioned that the club was considering expanding into other sports and securing a permanent facility.
Former President Rex Abitogun commended members for sustaining the organisation and noted that the Founders' Day provided an opportunity to remember the pioneers and reflect on the challenges overcome. Akpugo Ugochukwu Kennedy, the Immediate Past President, highlighted the competitive spirit displayed by members in their 50s and 60s during football matches. Kennedy expressed hope that the club would continue to evolve and attract younger members.
Other members, including Director of Sports Ambrose Okosun and Prince Leonard Pius Ocheuje, acknowledged the club's growth beyond its original purpose and recognised the pioneers whose vision led to its establishment. The anniversary celebration demonstrated the club's commitment to friendship, networking, and mutual support. The event concluded with a sense of accomplishment and optimism for the club's future.
