Cameroon's Mining Expert, Dr. Elias Pungong, has released a series of recommendations to help the nation and the African continent attain the "zero net" threshold of energy revolution by 2050 through the mining of critical minerals. These recommendations are contained in his book, "Mining the Future: The Global Race For Africa's Critical Minerals," launched in Yaounde on November 4, 2026. The book was launched in the presence of government officials, including the acting Minister of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development, Professor Fuh Calistus Gentry.

Dr. Pungong's book suggests that Cameroon should dig deep into critical minerals and metals like cobalt, thorium, iridium, lithium, and graphite to underpin the green technological revolution gaining global markets. This move aims to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and curb emissions. The book emphasizes the urgent need for Cameroon to control its natural resources and curtail exclusive foreign exploitation. Dr. Pungong advocates for technological sovereignty and the adaptation of technical education programs to train a skilled local workforce.

The author believes that the African continent has the power to change its fortunes by shifting from the current colonial model of extraction and sale to a more sustainable extraction and transformation model, including democratic accountability. This shift could enhance significant moves up the global value chain. Dr. Pungong's strategy is presented as an essential roadmap for transforming subsoil wealth into a real lever for sustainable national development.

The launch of the book was attended by heads of investment corporations, mining companies, and other guests. The six-chapter English language book provides a comprehensive guide for Cameroon's mining sector. Dr. Pungong's recommendations aim to help Cameroon harness its critical minerals to drive sustainable development and technological advancement.

The book aligns with the recent discovery of high-potential mineral deposits in Cameroon. By leveraging these resources, the country can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote a green technological revolution. Dr. Pungong's emphasis on technological sovereignty and local workforce development is seen as crucial for Cameroon's economic growth and sustainable development.

The Ministry of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development, along with other government agencies, are expected to implement policies based on Dr. Pungong's recommendations. This move is anticipated to boost Cameroon's mining sector and contribute to the country's economic growth. The implementation of these policies will be crucial in determining the success of Dr. Pungong's strategy.

Cameroon's efforts to harness its critical minerals and promote sustainable development are seen as a step towards achieving the country's economic and environmental goals. The country's progress in this area will be closely watched by stakeholders, including government officials, mining companies, and local communities. The success of Dr. Pungong's strategy will depend on effective implementation and collaboration among stakeholders.
