The Centre Hospitalier de Recherche et d'Application en Chirurgie Endoscopique et Reproduction Humaine (Chracerh) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, recently celebrated the birth of its 700th baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The milestone was marked with the birth of a 2.5kg baby boy at 10:18 am on October 28, 2026. The baby's mother, 42-year-old Alvine, had been seeking to become a mother for some time.

The IVF procedure that led to the 700th birth was performed by Professor Jean Marie Kasia, the hospital's administrator and director general, assisted by Dr. Vanina Ngono and Dr. Peter Mballa. According to Professor Kasia, the achievement is a collective satisfaction and confirms the progress made in the field of assisted medical procreation. The hospital aims to reach 1,000 IVF births by 2030.

Two other births were recorded on the same day, including a 2.450kg baby girl born to 45-year-old Ououssa, bringing the total number of IVF births at the hospital to 699 prior to the 700th birth. These births demonstrate the activity of the specialized center in helping couples facing conception difficulties.

Professor Kasia expressed his satisfaction with the hospital's progress, noting that when the goal of 1,000 IVF births was first announced, it seemed like a utopia. However, with 700 births already recorded, he is confident that the hospital can reach its target within the next two years, provided working conditions allow.

The hospital's success is attributed to the seriousness and mobilization of its medical team, according to Professor Kasia. He also mentioned a recently established pregnancy rate of around 33%, although the statistics still need to be refined. This rate concerns obtained pregnancies and does not correspond to the overall number of patients.

The Chracerh hospital has become a reference point for assisted medical procreation in Cameroon, offering hope to couples struggling with conception. The hospital's team continues to work towards improving its services and achieving its goals.

With 300 births needed to reach the target of 1,000 IVF births by 2030, the hospital remains committed to providing quality care to its patients. The achievement of the 700th birth is a testament to the hospital's dedication and expertise in the field of reproductive medicine.
