The Cameroonian government has instructed the Chinese company, Cfhec, to begin work on the second phase of the Douala-Yaoundé highway project. The project, which spans 125 km from Bibodi in the Centre region to Douala, will be implemented in multiple phases. The second phase will start at the 60th kilometer, where the first phase ended, and proceed to the 100th kilometer. This approach allows the company to prioritize sections with fewer issues while resolving obstacles on sensitive areas.

According to Adamou Moussa, Inspector General in charge of technical questions at the Ministry of Public Works (Mintp), the definitive route for the second phase has not been finalized due to disagreements on two sections. One of the contentious issues is the crossing of the Sanaga maritime forest reserve, where the company proposes a 24 km route, whereas the Mintp suggests a 14 km route to minimize environmental impact.

Another disputed section is the crossing beyond Edéa, in the Kopongo area, where the company's proposed route deviates from the Mintp's plan, potentially affecting a densely populated zone. The two parties will continue discussions to determine the best option. Meanwhile, the Governor of the Centre region is expected to conduct an on-site inspection to oversee the project's progress.

The second phase of the project involves constructing a highway that will improve transportation and connectivity between Douala and Yaoundé. The Cameroonian government has emphasized the importance of balancing development with environmental concerns. The project's implementation will require careful planning to mitigate potential risks and ensure its successful completion.

Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, the Minister of Public Works, has urged Cfhec to deploy its resources and personnel to ensure the timely commencement of the second phase. The company will need to work efficiently to complete the project, which is expected to boost economic growth and enhance the quality of life for residents in the regions.

The Douala-Yaoundé highway project is a significant infrastructure development initiative in Cameroon, and its successful completion will have a positive impact on the country's transportation network. The project's progress will be closely monitored by the government and stakeholders to ensure that it meets its objectives and is completed within the planned timeframe.

The project's second phase is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the regions. The Cameroonian government has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in infrastructure development to drive economic progress and improve the living standards of its citizens.
