Abidjan, October 11, 2026 - In celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, over 100 elderly Ivoirians gathered at Abidjan's Banco National Park on October 10 for a sports and recreational day. The event, organized by the Ministry of Employment, Social Protection, and Vocational Training's General Directorate of Social Protection, aimed to promote active aging and enhance the physical, psychological, and social well-being of seniors.
The event was part of the activities marking the octave of the International Day of Older Persons, which seeks to encourage adapted physical activities, promote a healthy lifestyle, and foster social inclusion of elderly individuals. According to Mme Kossa, Director of Social Action at the Ministry, such initiatives are crucial in promoting the well-being of older persons, as physical and sports activities help preserve health, maintain autonomy, and promote the fulfillment of seniors.
The event featured exchange sessions and awareness-raising discussions led by a gerontologist, a geriatrician, and medical doctors. These health professionals provided participants with advice on the benefits of physical activity, balanced diets, and healthy lifestyle habits that support healthy aging. The discussions also emphasized the need to combat social isolation, preserve autonomy, and promote the participation of elderly individuals in community life.
Participants welcomed the ministry's initiative, which provided them with an opportunity to engage in sports and recreational activities in a convivial setting. Logistical arrangements, including transportation, were made to facilitate their participation. The event allowed seniors to interact and socialize, promoting a sense of community and belonging.
According to the 2021 General Population and Housing Census (RGPH), Côte d'Ivoire has approximately 1,226,906 elderly individuals, representing 4.2% of the total population. This demographic evolution poses challenges related to preventing non-communicable diseases, combating social isolation, and maintaining autonomy among seniors. The sports and recreational day included various activities, such as gymnastics and fitness sessions, tailored to the needs and abilities of elderly participants. These activities aimed to promote physical well-being, flexibility, and mobility among seniors. By engaging in these activities, participants were able to maintain their physical health and develop a sense of camaraderie with their peers.
The Ministry of Employment, Social Protection, and Vocational Training's initiative demonstrates its commitment to addressing the needs of elderly Ivoirians.
