Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie TRAORE recently visited Brussels, where he met with senior officials from the European Union. On November 3 and 4, TRAORE held discussions with Birgitte Nygaard Markussen, the EU's new Special Representative for the Sahel, and Kaja Kallas, Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The talks focused on developing a new partnership between the EU and Burkina Faso.

The meetings aimed to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two parties, taking into account lessons learned from past incidents that strained their relations. In particular, the EU's approach to Burkina Faso and the Sahel region was discussed, with the EU expressing willingness to engage in a renewed and more open dialogue. The EU officials acknowledged Burkina Faso's sovereignty and expressed interest in aligning their cooperation with the country's development priorities.

TRAORE emphasized that Burkina Faso seeks a partnership based on sincerity, mutual respect, and equal footing. He noted that the country is not isolated but rather selective in its partnerships, seeking cooperation with those who respect its sovereignty and strategic choices. The minister highlighted the need for frank and open discussions, free from external pressures or biases.

The EU officials welcomed Burkina Faso's efforts to stabilize the country and promote economic growth. They acknowledged the country's progress, as recognized by international financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and UEMOA. The EU also praised Burkina Faso's hosting of major events like the FESPACO, SIAO, and Tour cycliste du Faso.

TRAORE expressed disappointment that the European Parliament had previously taken a resolution based on false claims by a French MEP, Christophe Gomart. He argued that such actions can undermine trust and hinder effective cooperation. The minister stressed the importance of revising the narrative on the Sahel region, highlighting its potential and positive developments.

The discussions also touched on the need for a more nuanced understanding of the Sahel region, beyond its security challenges. TRAORE encouraged the EU to adopt a more informed and contextual approach to its engagement with Burkina Faso and the region. The EU officials confirmed their commitment to a renewed partnership approach, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation.

Both parties agreed to maintain a permanent dialogue, with TRAORE insisting that this dialogue must be based on sincerity and mutual respect. The minister concluded that Burkina Faso is committed to rebuilding peace and dignity for its people and seeks partnerships that share this vision. The EU officials welcomed these commitments, and the two parties look forward to further engagement.
