The National Bureau of Grand Projects in Burkina Faso (BN-GPB) has taken a significant step towards achieving food self-sufficiency by handing over 200 tractors to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Animal and Fisheries Resources. This initiative is part of the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (IP-P3A), aimed at modernizing agricultural practices and increasing production capacity. The tractors, each with a power of 40 horses, were accompanied by plows and harrows.

The handover ceremony, which took place on November 6, 2026, in Ouagadougou, is a testament to the Burkinabé government's commitment to accelerating the country's agricultural development. The director-executive of BN-GPB, Pr Hamidou Sawadogo, urged the beneficiaries to use the equipment responsibly and efficiently. He also called on agricultural mechanization brigades to provide effective support to the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) agricultural workers, who are the primary beneficiaries of this donation.

The deployment of these tractors is expected to facilitate farm work, labor operations, and enable producers to cultivate larger agricultural areas. This development has been welcomed by the Minister of Agriculture, Commander Ismaël Sombié, who expressed his satisfaction with the initiative. He noted that the government's efforts, led by President Ibrahim Traoré, have yielded positive results, including a cereal production coverage rate of 124.6% in 2025.

The Ministry of Agriculture has received over 300 tractors in a previous batch, and this new donation is expected to further enhance the department's capabilities. The government's goal is to consolidate Burkina Faso's food sovereignty by increasing production capacity, improving agricultural yields, and making equipment and agricultural technologies more accessible to producers.

The Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (IP-P3A) and the Agro-Pastoral, Hydraulic, and Fisheries Offensive 2023-2025, extended to 2028, are two major initiatives driving Burkina Faso's agricultural development. These initiatives have enabled the country to make significant progress towards achieving food self-sufficiency.

The National Bureau of Grand Projects (BN-GPB) was established in August 2024 as a special-purpose development structure directly attached to the Presidency of Faso. Its mandate is to pilot and monitor presidential projects with significant economic and social impact. The BN-GPB's efforts are aligned with President Ibrahim Traoré's vision for Burkina Faso's food sovereignty.

The provision of tractors and other agricultural equipment is part of a broader strategy to reduce the hardship of rural work and enhance agricultural productivity. The government's approach aims to bring equipment and technologies closer to producers, making it easier for them to access mechanization services.
