The Coordination Nationale de Lutte Contre la Fraude (CNLF) in Burkina Faso has intensified its efforts to combat smuggling and illicit trade in the country. Between October 17 and 30, 2026, the CNLF conducted several operations, resulting in the seizure of goods worth over 95 million F CFA. These operations were carried out across various regions, including Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso, and Dakola.
On October 17, CNLF agents intercepted a tanker carrying 14,000 liters of fuel being sold in violation of regulations. This was followed by the discovery of 20 bags of cyanide, weighing 50 kg each, hidden in a shipment of clinker on October 20. The seized cyanide poses significant risks due to its hazardous nature when not handled according to regulations.
The CNLF continued its operations, seizing banned plastic bags and counterfeit lubricating oil from a warehouse in Ouagadougou on October 28. This highlights that the fight against smuggling extends beyond roadside checks to include storage facilities and distribution networks. Furthermore, on the Dakola axis, the CNLF intercepted smuggled ICE brand beverages, whose importation is prohibited.
A significant seizure was made by the West Investigation and Research Brigade in Bobo-Dioulasso, where 55 tons of imported rice were confiscated, despite an existing ban on its importation. This operation targeted a practice that could undermine national market regulation and protection of local production. These seizures demonstrate the breadth of the challenges faced by control services.
The seized goods include fuel, chemical products, plastic bags, and smuggled beverages, each presenting unique regulatory challenges. The CNLF's efforts aim to enforce price regulations, control hazardous substances, protect the environment, and apply import restrictions. The financial value of the seized goods exceeds 95 million F CFA, showcasing the scale of the smuggling activities being tackled.
Dr. Mohamadi Compaoré, the National Coordinator for Fraud Control, praised the agents for their professionalism and vigilance. He emphasized that the fight against smuggling is crucial for protecting consumer safety and health by preventing the circulation of illicit or restricted products. Additionally, this effort seeks to sanitize supply chains and safeguard the national economy's interests.
The CNLF plans to sustain and intensify its operations, urging traders, importers, and economic actors to align with the government's orientations under the Revolutionary Progressive People's framework. The coordinator warned that pressure will be maintained on those persisting in fraudulent practices, aiming to bring them to abandon such activities through increased vigilance and enforcement actions.
