Burkina Faso's healthcare system is set to benefit from a new digital platform called ViimSanté, designed to reduce administrative burdens on patients. The platform was launched on October 23, 2026, in Ouagadougou, under the patronage of Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou. Developed by two Burkinabè healthcare professionals, Dr. Nestor Pingwindé Sam and Dr. Josué Delwendé Delma, ViimSanté aims to facilitate medical prescriptions, insurance claims, and patient data management.

ViimSanté is an entirely Burkinabè-developed solution that seeks to address daily challenges faced by patients and healthcare professionals. The platform has a mobile and web version, providing patients, prescribers, and pharmacies with tailored spaces. According to Dr. Nestor Pingwindé Sam, the launch of ViimSanté demonstrates the country's commitment to leveraging innovation and technology to improve healthcare and citizens' well-being.

One of the significant challenges faced by patients in Burkina Faso is the need to make multiple trips to healthcare facilities and pharmacies due to incomplete or missing documentation. Dr. Josué Delwendé Delma explained that a patient's prescription may be rejected due to a missing prescriber's stamp, requiring them to revisit the healthcare facility and then return to the pharmacy. ViimSanté aims to eliminate such unnecessary trips by providing a digital prescription system.

The platform generates a unique reference number for each prescription, allowing pharmacists to verify its authenticity instantly. Patients receive their prescriptions and a reference number on their mobile phones. For insured individuals, the platform also generates insurance vouchers, reducing manual data entry and enabling pharmacies to process claims efficiently.

ViimSanté's benefits extend to insurers, who will experience improved document circulation, reduced manual claims processing, and faster payment procedures. The platform aims to streamline interactions between healthcare stakeholders, from medical consultations to medication delivery and payment. By doing so, it seeks to improve the overall efficiency of Burkina Faso's healthcare system.

While the platform's features show promise, its developers acknowledge that the real challenge lies in its adoption and implementation. Dr. Nestor Pingwindé Sam emphasized the need for gradual appropriation of the platform by users, stressing that its success depends on its practicality, reliability, and user acceptance. To address this, the developers plan to engage in continuous improvement, based on user feedback and observations.

The success of ViimSanté will be measured by its impact on the ground, and its developers are committed to collaborating with the Ministry of Health and healthcare professionals to ensure its effectiveness. By harnessing the power of digital technology, Burkina Faso's healthcare system can become more efficient, patient-centered, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
