The 2026-2027 academic year officially commenced in Burkina Faso on October 1, 2026. The launch ceremony took place at the Lycée mixte de Gounghin in Ouagadougou, presided over by Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, President of the Legislative Assembly. During the ceremony, the country's education stakeholders gathered to review recent achievements and set strategic directions for the new academic year.
The Minister of Secondary Education and Technical and Vocational Training, Pr Moumouni Zoungrana, emphasized the government's commitment to a high-performing education system. He stated that Burkina Faso is working to promote quality education that aligns with the country's economic realities and progressive revolution. To achieve this goal, the minister stressed the need for strong mobilization from the entire education community.
According to Pr Moumouni Zoungrana, the previous academic year saw remarkable results, including high success rates in national exams and a gradual reduction in academic delays. He also mentioned that several key reforms are ongoing, such as the introduction of national languages into teaching programs and the integration of technical and vocational training to facilitate youth insertion.
The minister highlighted that this new academic year is crucial for Burkina Faso's education system, marking not only the beginning of a new learning year but also a renewed collective commitment to quality education accessible to all. He emphasized that the theme of the year, "School and University Governance, Community Engagement, and Pedagogical Innovation," is a necessity and a pact for the future in the face of technological, economic, and social changes.
Pr Moumouni Zoungrana further explained that reinventing the national education trajectory requires the convergence of governance, community engagement, and pedagogical innovation. He stressed that aligning these three pillars is essential to achieving the ultimate goal of quality education for all, where the right to education means not only access to a classroom but also the right to acquire skills and a diploma.
Chantal Oumou Koné, representative of UNICEF and spokesperson for technical and financial partners, praised the progress made in Burkina Faso's education sector, including increased enrollment rates and exam admissions. She reaffirmed the partners' commitment to supporting the government in consolidating achievements, reducing inequalities, and strengthening the education system's resilience.
Fatou Sarah Guigma, representing the students, pledged to honor the sacrifices made by parents, the government, and security forces. She assured that students would respond with good academic performance and a clear vision for Burkina Faso's development. The academic year will run for nine months, with students and pupils from the 17 regions returning to classes and lecture halls.
